why spend the summer in the psalms?
Psalm 1 teaches that disciples of Jesus grow in their personal discipleship and love for God by spending time reading, meditating, praying, examining and memorizing God’s word. If the only interaction with scripture we have during the week is for one hour on Sunday mornings, we may find ourselves feeling distant or disconnected from God’s will for our lives, or maybe unsure of how to grow in our relationship with Him. Our prayer is that as we study the Psalms over the next 12 weeks, we will grow in personal devotion to God through our time in scripture and prayer.
which psalms will we be studying?
We’re glad you asked! This challenge is meant to be done weekly, studying one Psalm a week for 12 weeks. At the start of each week, we will reveal which Psalm we’ll be studying that week. You can sign up to receive weekly emails straight to your inbox to keep you on track, or check our Instagram each week on Monday mornings. P.S. This year’s challenge begins on May 21, 2023, but if you are finding this page after that date, it’s not too late to jump in with whatever week we’re on!
why study the same psalm for a whole week?
For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12 (CSB)
We felt studying one psalm a week was a realistic challenge for a wide range of people to accept. Whether you’re a long-time believer, brand new to studying scripture, a busy parent, a college student or empty nester, we wanted you to be able to grow in the spiritual discipline of reading your Bible this summer. We believe that as you experience a small taste of the renewal that is offered by spending time in God’s word, you will grow in your desire to make Bible reading a priority when life ramps back up in the fall.
The Psalms capture the immeasurable glory of God and His faithfulness in the midst of the struggles of everyday life. May you find rest in His word this summer!
